Tucson’s Marshall Foundation focuses mostly on early childhood education, social services


The Marshall Foundation (https://marshallfoundation.com/) holds several distinctions: Not only was it the first private foundation in Arizona, but it was seeded with money by the first woman professor at the University of Arizona, Louse Foucar Marshall.Additionally, since 1930, the foundation has gifted more than $30 million to almost 1,000 nonprofit organizations in Pima County, including the recent award of 21 grants totaling more than $816,000 to 15 nonprofits and the UA.“I think that Louise felt it was really important that we educate our population. She was also a very smart businesswoman who purchased land around the university,” said Kay Hoenig, Grant Managing Administrator for the foundation.The purchases in commercial and residential property were prescient. Leases from tenants around the University — including the Main Gate Square area — now fund the Marshall Foundation, which has gifted grants to organizations that support services to children and youth, community development, health care, education, women, human services and more.

Primarily grants focus on early childhood through undergraduate education and supportive wrap-around social services to aid underserved populations in attaining education.Recent recipients include Casa de Los Niños, Literacy Connects and a Sahuarita Food Bank program that partners with schools to help families facing food insecurity. Other 2024 grantees include programs within Tucson-area school districts; services linked to education for refugees and immigrants; and JobPath, which advances workforce development in Pima County.The foundation also funds projects and programs at the University of Arizona and provides roughly $400,000 annually in UA scholarships.Louise Marshall’s foresight created a foundation that enables the public to support its annual giving far into the future, according to Bruce Burke, President of the Marshall Foundation.“What a gift Louise Marshall gave to Tucson and Pima County, not only in creating a sustainable charitable foundation but also in making it effortless for students, residents and visitors to support it … each purchase from one of ou …
