
David Weekley Homes is making a rezoning push in Gastonia to allow for a project with a mix of housing types.Gastonia City Council this week voted to continue a public hearing on the homebuilder’s rezoning request to a meeting in January. The request is being made to allow a project with up to 650 homes and townhomes, city documents show. The site targeted by David Weekley Homes spans 262.8 acres off Union New Hope Road.Council members had concerns about issues including traffic impacts in the area.City documents show that David Weekley Homes’ rezoning request would allow up to 300 non-age-restricted, single-family detached homes. It calls for up to 200 townhomes and as many as 150 age-restricted, single-family homes at the site.The city’s planning staff has recommended approval of the rezoning request. At a meeting last month, Gastonia’s planning board was deadlocked, 3-3, on a vote to recommend approval of the request. Since a recommendation of approval did not receive a majority of support, the motion failed.Mayor Pro Tem Dave Kirlin led the push to continue the public hearing and table a decision for 60 days. Council members are targeting Jan. 18 to bring the matter back up.The site targeted by David Weekley Homes is owned by an entity affiliated with Walton Global Holdings, city documents state.
