Breaking down Glendale’s special election results: Prop. 401, 402

The special election was triggered by a zoning dispute, and the results will impact when the VAI Resort opens its doors in the West Valley. Here’s what we know.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Residents in Glendale participated in a special election on Tuesday, voting yes or no on two propositions related to the building of a resort.

The special election, triggered by a zoning dispute, centers around a proposed change involving the highly anticipated VAI Resort – a multi-billion-dollar entertainment and hospitality complex currently under construction in the West Valley.

At the heart of the ballot is a question about a 10-acre parcel of land located just southeast of the resort along 95th Avenue. Voters are being asked to approve or reject a zoning agreement between the City of Glendale and VAI Resort, known as Proposition 401. If approved, the land would be converted into a parking lot that would serve the resort’s corporate headquarters.

Voters are also deciding on Proposition 402, which would change Planned Area Development zoning rules to allow for VAI to “flush the filters for the swimming pools and water features directly into the sewer system,” build lighting at the MATTEL theme park that would exceed Arizona’s dark sky ordinance and make several changes to roads in the area.

12News reached out to VAI Resort for comment after the 8 p.m. results came in, but a company official said they will not be making a statement until more ballots are tabulated.

Election results

Currently, after the first results were released by Maricopa County at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the results are split.

25,922 votes have been counted.

For Prop. 401, No is leading with 50.27% of the vote (12,796 votes). For Prop. 402, Yes is leading with 51.68% of the vote (12,256 votes).

The races have not been called.
