Residents pack Northern Arizona Healthcare forum about proposed hospital


FLAGSTAFF — As organizers with “vote no” signs lined the entrance to the parking lot, dozens of people packed Flagstaff’s Murdoch Center Wednesday evening for Northern Arizona Healthcare’s two-hour question and answer session about its proposed hospital that will be on the November ballot in the form of Proposition 480.Northern Arizona Healthcare CEO Dave Cheney, Vice President of Construction and Real Estate Development Steve Eiss and Chief Nursing Officer Tyffany Laurano answered a wide array of questions touching on issues including project financing, added care capacity and the fate of the current hospital site north of downtown.Throughout the event, they made a point to emphasize that the ballot measure deals exclusively with the rezoning of land for a hospital, an associated medical building and a parking garage.”There is no commercial component to Prop 480, there is no residential component to Prop 480, there is no third-party developer component to Prop 480,” Eiss said. “It’s our land, it’s our building, we’re building it with our own money.”The ballot referendum will let voters decide on rezoning nearly 100 acres of undeveloped land near Fort Tuthill County Park for the first phase of Northern Arizona Healthcare’s proposed Health and Wellness Village. If approved, construction is expected to cost $800 million and be completed in 2027.The hospital system challenged the ballot referendum in late July, claiming that the information presented to voters on petitions was misleading. The petition language mentioned retail establishments, which are not included in the first phase of the proposed development plan, but did not mention health care facilities. The project’s second phase is expected to include retail and more.”Yes, we do have plans for a phase two that includes residential, commercial, health-focused retail and restaurants,” Eiss said …
