In comparison, the demise in June of the Arizona Coyotes barely registered a ripple.If you think the cancellation of the June 27 land auction where Alex Meruelo, the team’s former owner, had said he wanted to build a new arena immediately caused him to give up on the Valley, I suggest you think again.Meruelo had a billion reasons to leave town after he was forced in April by the NHL to sell the team back to the league for that number of dollars. The NHL then resold those assets at a slight profit to new deep-pocketed owners in Utah. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman – who has seen more than one Coyotes owner come and go over the years – basically told the audience that enough was enough while he co-hosted the infamous April 19 press conference when the sale of the team was announced, alongside a downtrodden, befuddled Meruelo sitting next to him at the podium.Read more: Al …
