Plan for Oak Creek Canyon road closure at switchbacks Aug. 19 to 23


Full daytime closures Monday to Friday, Aug. 19 to 23; with 24/7 single-lane restriction through late August.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is advising drivers and area residents and businesses to plan for upcoming daytime full closures and continued lane restrictions on State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon.

The restrictions are needed for drainage-and-sediment repair work in Oak Creek Canyon resulting from a rockfall event in March 2023.

The short-term closure for Tuesday, Aug. 13 has been canceled.

The short-term closures from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, and Friday, Aug. 16, remain in place from milepost 387 to 390.

Oak Creek Canyon residences and businesses located north and south of the closure area will remain accessible during the closure.

Additional Daytime Full Closures

Full closures will be from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, through Friday, Aug. 23.

North- and southbound SR 89A will be closed to all traffic between the switchbacks and Oak Creek Vista (mileposts 387-390).

Northbound detour: Sedona area drivers traveling north to Flagstaff will use State Route 179 to Interstate 17.

Southbound detour: Flagstaff area drivers traveling south to Sedona will use I-17 to SR 179.

The roadway will reopen to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel each day after work hours between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m.

A temporary traffic signal will be in place to direct traffic through the work zone.
