Happy Valley residents complain of traffic woes during I-17 construction


PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Traffic woes continue this weekend in a community north of Phoenix near I-17.Neighbors in this area are now familiar with major delays as ADOT periodically shuts down the freeway near their homes.“When you see the long line of traffic, it’s a little bit daunting,” said Christina Ramirez.From Friday night through Monday morning, I-17 is closed between Happy Valley Road and the Loop 303 because of a pavement improvement project.Even though neighbors are on board with fixing up the freeway, there’s a lot of frustration about how it’s practically impossible for people to get to and from their homes at the moment.“Myself and lot of my neighbors feel like we’re just held hostage in our homes all weekend,” said Monica Davis.Monica Davis lives off North Valley Parkway and she says just about every weekend has been a nightmare since construction started on the I-17 in May.“Nobody’s getting anywhere and that’s when the frustration levels rise and people are just so tired of it,” said Davis.Neighbors say during the closures, drivers are cutting through residential and side streets which is causing congestion in their neighborhood.“Everybody here, we’re having our HOA event tonight and we’ve all been talking about it and it impacts everyone and some people even said they might not have even come because of the traffic,” said Ramirez.In order to avoid a bumper-to-bumper standstill, ADOT says don’t listen to your GPS if it tells you to take a route that is different from their suggested detour.ADOT asks that you go west on Happy Valley Road to northbound Lake Pleasant Parkway and then get on the Loop 303 heading east to get around the closures.“I really wish that people would listen to those detours and it might take them a l …
