State: Area unemployment rates rise in November

Local unemployment rose in November, but with lower rates than a year ago according to state officials.The state Department of Labor this week reported that the November unemployment rate in Cattaraugus County was 3.7%, up from 3.4% in October but down from the 4.4% reported in November 2023. The labor force was 32,000 in November, down 400 from October and about 800 from November 2023. The employed labor force was 31,200, down 400 from October and 500 from November 2023. The unemployed labor force was 1,200, down 100 from October and down 300 from November 2023.The unemployment rate in Allegany County was 3.6% in November, up from 3.3% in October but down from 4% in November 2023. The labor force numbered 19,600 in November, down 200 from October, as well as from November 2023. The number of employed workers was 18,900, down 300 from October and down 100 from November. The number of unemployed workers was 700 in November, up 100 from October and down 100 from November 2023.

Statewide, the unemployment rate was 4.2% in November, up a tenth of a point from October and unchanged from November 2023. Statewide, 404,100 were unemployed, up 6,000 from October but down 3,500 from November 2023.The highest county unemployment rate was 7.1% in Bronx County. The highest outside of New York City was 4.4% in Hamilton County, followed by 4% in Fulton and Jefferson counties. The lowest unemployment rate was 2.7% in Columbia and Saratoga counties, followed by 2.8% in Ontario and Yates counties.The national unemployment rate was steady at 4.2% in November from the month before, but up from 3.7% in November 2023. Rates rose in six states in November from the month before, while the rate declined in one state.The lowest unemployment rate was 1.9% in South Dakota, while the highest was 5.7% in Nevada. Just over half of states saw rates lower than the national rate, while three states were higher.All rates come from surveys and methods created by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, and are not adjusted for seasonal variations. For example, unemployment rates in the area are generally highest in January and February, peaking in either of those months for the last decade except in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Allegany County’s unemployment peaked this year in January at 5.7%, while the Cattaraugus County rate also peaked in January at 5.3%.
