Gas prices need a fix, and changing Arizona’s fuel blend is an option, lawmakers say

It’s possible Arizona could change its fuel requirements to a blend more readily available. That could help insulate the state from price spikes.

With gas prices in the Phoenix area still nearly $1 per gallon higher than the national average, some Arizona lawmakers say it’s time to fix the state’s dependence on a boutique fuel blend that is required to mitigate air pollution.It’s possible Arizona could change its fuel requirements, with approval from the Environmental Protection Agency, to something more readily available. That could insulate the state from price spikes when the region’s fuel supply gets interrupted.The Phoenix area still is suffering from a price spike that began in early March, sending prices skyrocketing by $1 a gallon. For a few weeks, prices in Phoenix actually topped $5 per gallon and were higher than the average gas price in Los Angeles, a rare occurrence.
