
One of the Valley’s most anticipated projects to watch in 2024 could take a big step forward this week.Scottsdale-based law enforcement technology company Axon Enterprise Inc. on Jan. 24 will present plans to the Scottsdale Planning Commission for a mixed-use development to complement a new corporate headquarters.Those proposals — which include a general plan amendment and a rezoning case — call for nearly 2,000 multifamily residential units, a 425-key hotel and nearly 47,000 square feet of restaurant and retail on a 43-acre site at the southeast corner of the Loop 101 and Hayden Road in north Scottsdale.Axon (Nasdaq: AXON) owns more than 70 acres at that intersection. The eastern portion of the land has already been approved for Axon’s new headquarters, which will be located in a 400,000-square-foot office building, according to an application for the project.”If successful, this request on the western portion of the site would create a campus setting with regional-serving commercial, hotel, and residential uses that would be a direct benefit to the corporate headquarters,” Axon’s application read.The company could not be immediately reached for comment on Jan. 22.Axon filed an initial proposal to the city of Scottsdale in August. Those plans detailed a mixed-use project that looks slightly different than the one that will be heard this week. A 100-key hotel and more than 2,500 residential units were initially part of the vision for the west end of Axon’s parcel.Project faces neighborhood oppositionThe project will have to overcome a hurdle from earlier in the month as Scottsdale’s Airport Advisory Commission voted against the project on a 7-0 vote on Jan. 17.
