PHOENIX — A Texas-based technology infrastructure company broke ground on a 100-acre new Glendale data center officially began on Tuesday.
Aligned Data Centers plans to build four facilities on the 100-acre site. At the heart of this development is PHX-13, a 72-megawatt data center that is now under construction.
“This project and all the benefits it will bring are exciting for our Glendale community,” Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers said in a Thursday announcement from the city.
Leaders behind new Glendale data center concerned about sustainability
A new 230 kV transmission line provided by Arizona Public Service will support the development’s energy needs, according to the release.
Organizers behind the project say they’re prioritizing sustainability amid concerns over data centers are straining Arizona’s power grid. For context, a medium-sized data center uses around the same amount of energy as 300,000 households.
Currently, authorities are researching whether this data centers’ massive energy needs will impact taxpayers as well as the environment. The Arizona Corporation Commission recently opened a docket to investigate the matter. Essentially, authorities want to ensure residential customers aren’t shouldering the energy costs needed to power data centers.
The city’s announcement said the PHX-13 facility will use a closed-loop cooling system and recycled water to reduce its water consumption. The company also retained the site’s well rights, which allows them to keep groundwater on-site, supporting the local ecological balance.
The city’s mayor believes the Glendale data center will be a boon to the local economy.
“In 2025, data centers are essential to the U.S. economy and future growth,” Weiers said.
