Trustees hear building code changes, reject Arizona Trail bid





In a busy meeting, the Buena Vista Board of Trustees discussed potential changes to building codes, approved the move of the Buena Viking liquor license and heard a new bid for the Arizona Trail project.Trustees hear building codeChaffee County Building Official Pat Green presented the proposed new building codes that, if adopted by the County Commissioners, would take effect at the beginning of next year.
Currently, the county, and by extension the town of Buena Vista, follows the 2015 International Building Code, International Fire Code, International Mechanical Code and International Plumbing Code. Its Electric code dates back to 2006.Up for adoption, per state mandates, are the 2021 “I Codes.”The building code changes are minor, Green said, but updating the energy codes from 2006 to 2021 “Is going to be a big one.”Because building permit applications submitted before the end of the year will be held to the current codes rather than the 2021 codes, Green said he anticipates “a big rush between now and the next for weeks.“It may add some costs, but it’s mostly a fear of the unknown,” Green said. “That happens every code cycle.”Buena Vista planning director Joel Benson said that his office had an internal deadline of December 8 to get applications processed before the end of the year.Green said that the county would be holding information sessions to help developers get up to speed on 15 years of updates to the Energy Code.Two public readings on the …
