Surprise cop adopts dog seen being abandoned by former owner on camera

Benji, the 2-year-old Chihuahua, seen being abandoned by his former owner in Surprise now has a new home.

SURPRISE, Ariz. — The 2-year-old Chihuahua abandoned near a walking trail last month has found a new home.

The Arizona Humane Society recently announced that Benji, the small dog left behind by a former owner, had been adopted by a new owner.

Surveillance footage captured Benji exiting a vehicle near Peoria Avenue and Perryville Road then someone saying “Bye, bye” as the car drove off. Video of Benji being abandoned was shared online and quickly caught the attention of the community.

Surprise police later arrested two people who were allegedly in the car that left Benji behind.

The Humane Society said an officer from the Surprise Police Department has recently adopted Benji.

“Abandonment stories like Benji’s illustrate Maricopa County’s animal welfare crisis, which is at an all-time high,” the humane society wrote in a statement.

The humane society offers resources to help pet owners avoid having to surrender or abandon their animals. More information can be found here.
