Santa Cruz County has successfully recovered $5.9 million that was embezzled by its former treasurer, Mary Ann Fausett, several years after the funds went missing. Fausett, who served as the county treasurer for more than three decades, was arrested in 2019 and later convicted of stealing taxpayer money. County officials said the money was recouped through insurance settlements and restitution payments, helping to restore critical public funds.
The discovery of the theft initially shocked the community and led to increased scrutiny over financial oversight in the county. Since then, officials have implemented stricter accounting procedures and more robust monitoring to prevent similar incidents in the future, aiming to reestablish public trust.
