
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Yuma leaders are working on a formal proposal to designate a portion of U.S. Highway 95 as the Gary Knight Memorial highway. Knight served as an Arizona State Transportation Board member along with the Yuma city council.
“Late council member Knight was a great advocate for our region. He understood the importance of U.S. Highway 95, and he was instrumental in securing funding for the quarter and the widening improvements that are currently going on,” said Yuma Metropolitan Planning Organization Executive Director Crystal Figueroa.
The area of highway proposed is mile marker 31 to 48, which winds its way north of Yuma.
“U.S. 95 is a critical route in our region, and it supports cross-border commerce as well as military operations through the Yuma Proving Ground,” said Figueroa.
Gary’s wife Bonnie Knight shares her gratitude of keeping his legacy alive.
“He did work so hard, and because he touched so many people’s lives. You know not only mine and his family loved him, but the community loved him. So I do think it’s very important for us to do this honor for him and for the family. It’ll be something that people will drive into town and see, and I think that’s a wonderful thing,” said Bonnie Knight.
