Even though it’s got all the skid marks of an artificial intelligence prank, Facebook posts on Maricopa 347 Rants and the InMaricopa.com group proposing a State Route 347 alternative highway has gotten some serious social media mileage.
Maricopa resident Alex Solomon on Monday posted a website link to the proposed (fake) toll road, Indian Route 347, a so-called toll road that would bypass Maricopa motorists’ much maligned SR 347 altogether.
It’s an early April Fool’s Day, for sure.
An annual toll of $999 would be levied on motorists to finance and maintain the imaginary highway.
Perhaps the dead giveaway is the unlikely project is not proposed by any agency or company. Another test of inauthenticity: the website is created by GoDaddy’s AI service and uses only AI-generated images.
“Indian Route 347 is a premier toll road proposed and operated by the Gila River Indian Community, providing a faster and exclusive connection between Maricopa and Phoenix,” the bogus website states. “With an annual access pass, travelers can enjoy reduced congestion and a scenic drive through the GRIC lands. All proceeds support the community’s infrastructure and cultural preservation efforts. Explore a new way to travel while contributing to the sustainable growth of the Gila River Indian Community.”
The artificial comic behind the proposal said IR 347 is set to become “one of America’s safest highways thanks to its design by German engineers removed for their work on the Autobahn.”
The German highway has some speed limited stretches, but some segments are without any posted speed, although 81 miles per hour is suggested.
Some of the features of IR 347: High-performance asphalt for enhanced durability and reduced noise, smart road technologies and median dividers, and removal of roadside obstacles, with energy attenuation devices to minimize collision risk.
