
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona is seeing a disturbing trend on our roads. ADOT’s latest data shows there were nearly 1,300 traffic deaths in 2022, and a spokesperson said they expect numbers to rise.The federal government requires every state to have a new Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) every five years. ADOT’s 2024 SHSP will focus on reducing traffic fatalities by 20% by 2030.“That’s an ambitious goal,” said Steve Elliott, a spokesperson for ADOT.According to ADOT data, there’s been a 55% spike in fatalities on all roads from 2013 to 2022, with 74% of the crashes caused by human behavior like DUIs, distracted driving and speeding, according to crash report data.“Unfortunately, we’re moving in the wrong direction,” said Elliott.ADOT’s 2014 SHSP aimed to reduce traffic fatalities by 3% to 7% in five years. Elliott explained the 2019 SHSP did not have a percentage set. Instead, it had a long-term goal to reach zero deaths.Arizona’s Family asked ADOT why those plans did not meet their objectives.“Some of it is population. Some of it is driver behavior. In fact, on almost all of it, it’s driver behavior so we’re trying, through this update, to find better ways to communicate with the traveling public that there’s a role for every one of us in reducing highway fatalities in our state,” said Elliott.The 2024 SHSP is still in the works.
