ADOT adding traffic information for highway to Rocky Point


TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Ahead of the holiday season, the Arizona Department of Transportation is expanding the reach of the AZ511 information system on holiday travel weekends.The pilot program will now include Mexican Federal Highway 8, which is between Lukeville and Puerto Penasco/Rocky Point.People traveling this holiday season will now see crashes, lane closures, restrictions, and other traffic-related events.“If something happens on the highway, the officials in Sonora, they will call our Traffic Operations Center,” said ADOT spokesperson Doug Pacey. “When our dispatchers get that information, they will input it into our system like they would any other kind of incident or event, and then it will it’ll be displayed. It will appear in 511, for anyone to see.”The first updates are already live for Thanksgiving weekend travelers.Pacey said this is the perfect time to expand their services, making the international travel experience as enjoyable and efficient as possible.“We really want to make sure that people who are traveling between Arizona and down to Puerto Penasco have that information so they know if there’s a restriction or if they want to delay their travel or do something else they have that information,” Pacey said.This pilot program stems from collaboration among ADOT, the Arizona-Mexico Commission, the Arizona Office of Tourism and the State of Sonora’s Comisión Sonora-Estados Unidos.The Lukeville port is the main way many get from Tucson to Rocky Point, but there is another way.Some travel south from Nogales and take the Caborca Highway to make the longer drive over to Rocky Point. Sometimes, people take Caborca because the Lukeville port is not open as late as the ones in Nogales, but it can be dangerous.Caborca may not be a good idea due to safety. At …
