Ironman Arizona is taking over Tempe this Sunday. Here are roads that will be impacted


Race weekend for the 2024 Ironman Arizona has arrived! The highly anticipated and challenging triathlon will take place in the Valley throughout the day on Sunday, November 15.Whether you’re competing in the triathlon, watching the event, or simply traveling through the greater Tempe area, expect to encounter increased traffic this weekend. Here are the road closures, restrictions, and alternate routes to be aware of.According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), there will be several road restrictions and closures in the Fountain Hills area during the event.State Route 87 will be reduced to one lane in each direction between McDowell Road and Shea Boulevard. Additionally, westbound McKellips Road will be closed between Loop 202 and Alma School Road, and the eastbound Loop 202 off-ramp at McKellips Road will have restricted access.ADOT recommends using eastbound Shea Boulevard from Loop 101 in Scottsdale as an alternative route to access S.R. 87 in Fountain Hills.Freeway restrictions:Ironman Arizona closures and other Phoenix-area freeway restrictions this weekendThe Ironman has 3 different courses for swimming, biking, runningThe event kicks off at 6:50 a.m. at Tempe Town Lake, where participants will begin with a 2.4-mile swim. They will then transition into a 112-mile bike ride, passing through Tempe Beach Park, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and out to the Beeline Highway, according to Ironman Arizona.The final leg of the race, a 26.2-mile marathon, will take athletes back to Tempe Town Lake. The running course will guide participants around the lake, through Papago Park, and along Priest Drive before finishing on Rio Salado Parkway.These areas and their surroundings will experience partial or full closures on Sunday from approximately 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for the westbound slow lane of Rio Salado Parkway, which will remain closed between Ash Avenue and Priest Drive until midnight.Additionally, the northbound and southbound Loop 101 on- and off-ramps at McKellips Road, as well as the eastbound and westbound Loop 202 turn lanes onto Scottsdale Road, also will be closed on Sunday.Mill Avenue, Rural Road, McClintock Drive and McDowell Road will be affected as well.
