Velvet Taco enters Arizona market with Scottsdale location


Velvet Taco, a Dallas-based restaurant chain with locations throughout Texas and several other states, is set to open its first location in Arizona in Scottsdale.Velvet Taco has taken over the two-story, 3,081-square-foot restaurant space at 4166 N. Scottsdale Road formerly occupied by Second Story. The restaurant, which can seat 88 people inside and 20 more on the patio, will open on Nov. 4.Velvet Taco sets itself from other taco and Mexican restaurants by not just serving Mexican food, but by putting flavors from across the world inside its tacos.“We’re not afraid to put anything into a tortilla and call it a taco,” Venecia Willis, Velvet Taco’s director of culinary, said. “Our tacos are globally inspired – they’re more of an experience to allow people to taste different cuisine. The tortilla is just the vessel to get like those flavors to someone’s like mouth.”The restaurant’s menu consists of spicy tikka chicken tacos, beer battered cauliflower tacos and even Cuban pig tacos with slow cooked pulled pork. Velvet Taco also serves a popular red velvet cake and a robust margarita and other mixed drinks.Velvet Taco already thinking of Arizona expansionThe Scottsdale location will be the first for Velvet Taco in the Valley, but the company’s CEO, Clay Dover, told the Business Journal that it will likely open more in the coming years.“We specifically have waited until the right spot came out right there on Scottsdale Road,” Dover said. “We like to plant the flag in the, in the cool hip spots, and then we’ll grow out. We think that we’ll have seven to 10 locations in the Phoenix market over the next few years.”Velvet Taco …
