TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The Arizona Department of Transportation shared its plans to improve the Interstate 19 Interchange and Irvington Road in a meeting on Oct. 1, 2024.Many residents living on Tucson’s southside get stuck in traffic while passing through the current interchange. Some of those residents told 13 News that “it’s about time” that ADOT makes these improvements.The roads get congested easily, especially during the winter months when people are often shopping for gifts. For people driving north towards Tucson on the I-19 from Nogales, the Tucson Spectrum is the first shopping center along the highway. This causes heavy traffic around the area.Southside Tucson resident Laura Manriquez said she’s relieved for the revamp of the roads.“Safety is a big issue to me,” Manriquez said. “I see a lot of people even walking to the Spectrum area, and I think this is going to be a big improvement to everyone.”Manriquez was born and raised in southside Tucson. Living in the area for over 65 years, she said she looks forward to the safety improvements.“I’m very excited, I just feel like it’s about time,” Manriquez said. “My grandkids can get on the freeway easily, and I’m just very excited it’s finally going to happen.”ADOT spokesperson Garin Groff said the agency has been planning improvements to the roads for years.
