U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake called Wednesday for a series of new or revamped federal programs intended to bring down the costs of buying a house to undo what she called the “horrible” policies of the White House and her Democratic opponent, Ruben Gallego.From expanding a federal mortgage assistance program to creating one to reduce the interest costs of loans by “buying down” interest rates, Lake outlined several steps she favors to respond to a shortage of affordable housing.The proposals for a more activist federal government on at least one domestic policy front come as Lake also has said the federal budget should be cut by at least 50%.She dismissed the seeming contradiction by saying the budget is both too big and her proposals would be short-term.“The great news is this won’t be a program that lasts forever,” Lake said during a news conference in Chandler. “It won’t even be a program; it will be an opportunity.
