PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is requesting public feedback on two key safety proposals: an update to its Strategic Highway Safety Plan and the state’s first Active Transportation Safety Action Plan. The proposals are available for review at azdot.gov/SafetyPlan, and comments are accepted through Friday, Sept. 6.Federal regulations mandate that each state develop a Strategic Highway Safety Plan to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on public roadways, with updates required every five years. ADOT collaborates with local, state, federal, and other stakeholders to enhance highway safety through coordinated programs and resource sharing. The updated Strategic Highway Safety Plan, revised after a series of public meetings earlier this year, targets key areas contributing to severe crashes in Arizona: human behavior, intersections, lane departures, vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists, and incidents on tribal lands.Proposed strategies include:Enhancing visibility for all road users and roadway featuresIncorporating vulnerable road users more prominently in planning and designReducing high-risk driving behaviorsIncreasing high-visibility enforcement at intersectionsPromoting safety measures at crash scenesThis update aligns with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe System Approach, which promotes a holistic view of roadway safety and shared responsibility.ADOT is also working on the Active Transportation Safety Action Plan, addressing rising pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities, mainly occurring on local roads. This plan proposes specific projects along the state highway system to improve safety for these groups.Feedback on both proposals can be submitted through the following channels by Sept. 6:Online survey: azdot.gov/SafetyPlanCommentsEmail: ngbecerra@a …
