To date in Michigan, 162 people have been charged with fraud or identity theft for crimes committed during the pandemic. Ninety people have been convicted, 69 sentenced and $90 million recovered.
LANSING, MI – The federal government awarded the Michigan Unemployment Agency a $2.6 million grant this month to pursue cases of pandemic fraud.Funding from the American Rescue Plan Act will pay for 30 new unemployment agents in the state’s fraud and investigative division, a news release said. They will be dedicated to resolving any claims that stemmed from identity theft during the COVID-19 pandemic.
