Supervisors get update on broadband project progress





Wecom, a Kingman-based telecommunications company, has obtained many of the permits they need to bring broadband internet service to La Paz County. They plan to start actual physical construction on the project in January 2024. That’s what Wecom CEO Paul Fleming told the La Paz County Board of Supervisors at their Nov. 6 meeting.Fleming first announced the broadband plans to the Supervisors in May. At the Nov. 6 meeting, he said he wanted to give the Supervisors an update on what they were doing and how far along they were in the project.The project will be done in eight phases, and, given the funding sources involved, it will need to be completed by June 2025. Fleming said they hope to have it done before that. They plan to lay 1.8 million feet of fiber optics and reached 6,000 to 7,000 homes.

Wecom is currently working on Phase I in La Paz County. Fleming said they have completed 902 pole applications with Arizona Public Service. They have also made plans for 1,271 poles, and completed their maps and fiber designs.They are currently in the process of completing 369 pole applications. Their applications with La Paz County are expected to be complete and submitted by Nov. 20.
