How Arizona’s bioscience boom is reshaping the state’s economy


Over the last year, Arizona added nearly 15,000 new jobs in health care, and analysts expect there are plenty more to come.Major investments from industry leaders, game-changing research initiatives, and a fast-growing startup ecosystem are fueling a growing momentum across Arizona’s bioscience and health care communities. In addition to job gains, local leaders see Arizona emerging as one of the nation’s most dynamic hubs for bioscience innovation.“Across bioscience and health care, we are seeing remarkable growth in terms of new expansions as well as investments from established Arizona leaders,” said Sandra Watson, president and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority.Headlining those recent investments is Mayo Clinic’s $1.9 billion, 1.2-million-square-foot expansion of its Phoenix campus, a transformative project expected to create 3,500 jobs in the next decade. The investment will expand clinical space on the campus by nearly 60%, enable new innovative care concepts, enhance research capabilities, and advance patient care.“This incredible investment will forever change the patient and staff experience in Arizona as Mayo Clinic grows and reinvents its nationally recognized clinical care, research, and education,” said Richard J.
