
Taser and body camera maker Axon Enterprise Inc. is supporting a new bill as part of a nearly four-month legislative campaign to bring its $1.3 billion Scottsdale headquarters project to fruition.An amended bill that would expand rights for some areas zoned for light industrial uses was passed by an 8-0 vote on Wednesday by the Arizona House of Representative’s Committee on International Trade. If ultimately approved, the bill could allow Axon to proceed with its ambitious headquarters campus and sidestep a Scottsdale referendum effort that spun up in opposition to the nearly 1,900 residential units planned at the site.The March 26 vote came after Republican Rep. Tony Rivero put forth an amendment to Senate Bill 1543 that would expand the allowances of light industrial zoning to permit hotel and multifamily housing in certain circumstances, without requiring a public hearing. For instance, the updated bill would apply to international headquarters campuses like the one proposed by Axon (Nasdaq: AXON).Axon’s 70-acre site was zoned for industrial use before Scottsdale City Council approved a rezoning in November that allowed nearly 2,000 multifamily residential units and a 435-key hotel to be included in the plans.
