Ohio unemployment reaches 2-year high in January

After monthly increases in 2024, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported unemployment reached its highest level since early 2023.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ohio’s unemployment rate rose in January, the highest it has been in more than two years, according to state labor officials.That state’s unemployment rate increased to 4.6% in January, up from a revised 4.5% in December.Unemployment rates increased each month in 2024 with a dip towards the end of the year. While Ohio’s November unemployment rate did not change from the previous month, October was the first time Ohio’s unemployment rate had decreased since May 2023, when it hit historic lows.The state’s January unemployment rate remains above the national average which was 4% in January, down from 4.1% in December 2024 and up from 3.7% in January 2024.The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Friday that the state’s non-agricultural wage and salary employment decreased by 800 jobs over the month. Employment dropped from a revised 5,654,600 in December to 5,653,800 in January.The state’s report is a count of the number of jobs filled in Ohio – regardless of where the worker lives. A person working two jobs counts as two. The unemployment rate is the percentage of people out of work among total Ohioans working or looking for work.The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in January was 271,000, up from 265,000 in December 2024. The number of unemployed has increased by 39,000 in the past 12 months from 232,000.
