I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement: What to know about the massive metro Phoenix construction project

The seemingly endless construction on Interstate 10 through Phoenix and Tempe could come to a close after four years.Work crews may soon complete the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project between the Interstate 17 split and Loop 202.The project aims to relieve traffic congestion for the over 300,000 drivers who travel through the I-10 Broadway Curve, an area in Tempe that curves beneath Broadway Road, the Arizona Department of Transportation said. By 2040, the number of drivers is expected to jump to 375,000.The anticipated completion date is in 2025, but in the meantime, the project has resulted in road closures and restrictions almost every weekend. The 11-mile Broadway Curve Improvement Project is one of nine transportation projects starting or continuing in 2025, according to ADOT.Here’s what motorists should know. What is the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project? The project is along a section of the I-10 between Baseline Road and 40th Street in Phoenix and specifically refers to a portion of I-10 beneath Broadway Road.According to ADOT, the Maricopa Association of Governments identified the need for the project to reduce travel times during rush hour, improve airport access, support ridesharing and transit and prepare the region for future growth. It is the largest construction project in ADOT history, the agency said. The project includes:Widening I-10 to six lanes and two HOV lanes between U.S. 60 and I-17 in both directions.  A fourth lane will also be included in each direction on the section between Ray Road and the US 60.Building longer entrance and exit ramps along I-10 to ease merging traffic.Rebuilding the I-10 interchange with State Route 143, as well as creating connections to State Route 143 from the I-10 HOV lanes.Replacing the Broadway Road and 48th Street bridges over I-10.View in new tabWhere is construction for the Broadway Curve Improvement Project? The construction runs along an 11-mile stretch of I-10 between Loop 202 and I-17 near Sky Harbor International Airport.Additional construction will occur on State Route 143 and U.S. 60 where the freeways meet I-10. Greg Stanton blasts Trump executive order he says could cost Arizona billionsWhen will construction end on the Broadway Curve Improvement Project? The project is slated to finish in spring 2025 after construction began in the fall of 2021. But, construction could take longer because of unexpected delays, ADOT warned. How does the Broadway Curve construction impact drivers?Nearly every weekend, it seems like another section of the construction shuts down a major roadway. ADOT alerted drivers that full or partial closures of U.S. 60, I-10 and State Route 143 would be necessary for the project.ADOT advised drivers to use designated detours and navigate local streets to avoid the closures. The agency also recommended allowing for extra travel time. How is the Broadway Curve Improvement Project funded? The Broadway Curve Project, estimated to cost $615 million, is funded by a half-cent sales tax Maricopa County voters approved in 2004 through Proposition 400. Nearly $730 million was set aside for the project. The Federal Highway Administration provided additional funding, ADOT said. The half-cent sales tax was on the ballot in 2024 as Proposition 479 and passed. The tax has funded Maricopa County’s roads and transportation infrastructure since 1985 and will continue until 2045. It amounts to 1 cent for every two dollars spent. A substantial portion would go to highway projects, with a little more than a quarter going to bus transit. For more information about the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, visit: https://i10broadwaycurve.com. …
