A holiday from roadwork: No AZ freeway closures through early January


Arizona’s highways will not have any scheduled construction closures during the high travel times surrounding Christmas and New Year’s, Arizona Department of Transportation officials said Monday.There are no closures or major lane restrictions planned on Arizona’s state highways through Monday, Jan. 6, though there will be some project work underway.Drivers should still plan to allow time for unexpected issues on the road, like crashes or disabled vehicles, officials said.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNine people died in fatal collisions over Christmas weekend in Arizona last year, and four of those collisions were alcohol-related, officials said.ADOT offers several options for checking whether roads are clear:The Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov allows travelers to map routes and see closures affecting travel time.The AZ511 app for Apple and Android mobile devices is a smartphone-friendly version of the Arizona Traveler Information site.Within Arizona, dialing 511 calls the Arizona Traveler Information line, which offers traffic reports. Just say the route you’re driving and the automated system will respond with traffic delay information. If 511 doesn’t work from a cellphone, dial 1-888-411-ROAD (7623).
